Hackney Youth Jazz Ensemble

Hackney Junior Jazz Ensemble – Wednesdays 4:30 – 6pm

Session leaders:  Gerry Hunt and Jonny Enser

Entry Criteria:

    1. Applicants should be minimum Yr5+ (primary) or Yr7+ (secondary)
    2. Grade 2 standard or higher – no need for the exam to be taken, equivalent standard via teacher or school recommendation is acceptable
    3. The ability to sight-read is desirable but not essential. However, members are encouraged to continue developing this important and valuable skill.
    4. Applicants will be invited to an informal assessment as part of
    5. Applicants must either live in the borough of Hackney or attend a Hackney school/college/academy.
    6. HJJE may also accept ‘associate members’ from neighbouring borough’s music education hubs. In this instance, with the exception of ‘5’ above, all other membership criteria apply. In addition, ‘associate members’ are subject to a higher fee than those meeting criteria ‘5’.

Hackney Creative Jazz Ensemble – Wednesdays 5 – 7pm

Entry Criteria:

      1. Applicants must be aged 11 – 18yrs (Year 7 students and above) and be of Grade 5 performance examination standard or higher. The ability to sight-read is desirable but not essential. However, members are encouraged to continue developing this important and valuable skill.
      2. All applicants must attend an informal audition prior to entry, as part of the assessment for membership process.
      3. Applicants must either live in the borough of Hackney or attend a Hackney school/college/academy.
      4. HCJE may also accept ‘associate members’ from neighbouring borough’s music education hubs. In this instance, with the exception of ‘3’ above, all other membership criteria apply. In addition, ‘associate members’ are subject to a higher fee than those meeting criteria ‘3’.

Hackney Borough Youth Orchestra

Entry Criteria:

The HBYO is open to students who are aged 11 – 18yrs (Year 7 students and above). In addition, the following criteria applies:

  1. Applicants must be in Year 7 or above, and be of Grade 5 performance examination standard or higher. Applicants need not necessarily have taken a Grade 5 performance examination but should be confident sight-readers to the level expected of Grade 5 standard players.
  2. All applicants must attend an audition prior to entry, as part of the assessment for the membership process.
  3. Applicants must either live in the borough of Hackney or attend a Hackney school/college/academy.
  4. HBYO may also accept ‘associate members’ from neighbouring borough’s music education hubs. In this instance, with the exception of ‘3’ above, all other membership criteria apply. In addition, ‘associate members’ are subject to a higher fee than those meeting criteria ‘3’.

Hackney Training Orchestra

Entry Criteria:

The HTO is open to students who are in Year 4 and above. In addition, the following criteria apply:

  1. Applicants must be of Grade 2 performance examination standard or higher. Applicants need not necessarily have taken a Grade 2 performance examination but should be able to sight-read to the level expected of Grade 2 standard players.
  2. No audition is necessary for the HTO. Instead, players may become members by a written recommendation from their instrumental tutor or school music teacher.
  3. Applicants must either live in the borough of Hackney or attend a Hackney school/college/academy.
  4. HTO may also accept ‘associate members’ from neighbouring borough’s music education hubs. In this instance, with the exception of ‘3’ above, all other membership criteria apply. In addition, ‘associate members’ are subject to a higher fee than those meeting criteria ‘3’.
