Alter Ego Auditions – January 25th, Hackney Empire

Back by popular demand! East London’s biggest talent showcase returns and with it comes your chance to be chosen as the winner of Alter Ego 2020!

Whatever your talent, we want to see it!

Previous finalists performed alongside Yxng Bane, Krept and Konan, Lady Leshurr, Rudimental, Big Tobz, Misha B, Paigey Cakey, Ghetts, Sneakbo and many more… But you have to be in it to win it – for your chance to perform in front of over a thousand people, in a lineup with some major headline acts, come down to Hackney Empire and audition for Alter Ego 2020.

Auditions Date: Sat 25 Jan 10am–6pm, Hackney Empire – Empire Two

Applicants must be aged 13-19.

Finalists will be mentored by top industry professionals -they then will perform alongside headline acts in front of over a thousand people at the Alter Ego 2019 Final, Fri 21 Feb at Hackney Empire.

LSO Discovery Creative Days for Teachers

Led by LSO Workshop leader Rachel Leach and LSO musicians, these day-long workshops at LSO St Luke’s equip primary school teachers, and other staff teaching music, with the skills to take a creative and hands-on approach to composing music in the classroom.

As part of each Creative Day, attendees will receive a complimentary ticket to a linked LSO evening concert at the Barbican Hall.

Grand Union Youth Orchestra Masterclasses

The unique Grand Union Youth Orchestra (GUYO), London’s pioneering world music and jazz youth ensemble, brings together young musicians aged 12 – 26 who wish to explore the world’s major musical cultures. Players of non-Western instruments are particularly welcome.

GUYO masterclasses or workshops take place at Rich Mix, generally on the first Sunday in each month. GUYO also performs regularly at Rich Mix, at Festivals and other events, and takes part in projects with the parent Grand Union Orchestra and GU Voices.

Join GUYO, no auditions, FREE OF CHARGE, and:

  • Take part in regular high-profile performances
  • Work alongside leading professional musicians
  • Learn about world music, first hand, from experts
  • Discover new instruments and develop improvisation skills
  • Meet and create with like-minded young musicians

Serious & the EFG London Jazz Festival Jazz Experiments: Exploring Jazz Through the Music of Charles Mingus.

This mass participation performance piece will be composed and led by double bassist Ed Babar, and the Blues and Roots Ensemble. Amateur musicians of all ages (7 +) and abilities will are invited to apply to take part in this exciting new project.

Exploring ideas of collective improvisation, Blues and Roots Ensemble have created a new piece for musicians of all ages and abilities, based on the music of Charles Mingus, including swing, bebop and Latin American styles.

Participants will perform this new suite alongside the ensemble and will be given the opportunity to improvise in both solo and group settings. Through a series of workshops, ideas such as swing phrasing, rhythm section accompaniment and soloing will be explored, guided by specialist jazz educators from the band. These workshops will culminate in a live performance on Royal Festival Hall’s Clore Ballroom as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2018.

Blues and Roots Ensemble

Blues and Roots Ensemble is a band of 7 diverse performers hailing from countries as far afield as Sicily, South Africa, India and Cuba. Led by double bassist Ed Babar, the group aims to share the stunning music of Charles Mingus through live performances and education/outreach work. Having launched in January 2017 the band has quickly grown a reputation for its raucous and energetic performances, and creative interpretations of classic Mingus compositions, selling out venues such as The Jazz Cafe, The Vortex, The Crypt and The Elgar Room in the Royal Albert Hall. 

Through its education work the band has spread this unique music to thousands of pupils nationwide, receiving grants for schools’ projects through Arts Council England and Cambridgeshire Music Service as well as workshops through Cambridge Jazz Festival.
