Grand Union Orchestra Summer School 2017 – Applications Open

The Grand Union Orchestra is delighted to say that the applications for this year’s Grand Union Summer School are now open!

Their fantastic Summer School returns for the fourth year running. Building on the immense success of our three previous Summer Schools, 2017 promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

Open to young musicians aged 12-21, this is a unique opportunity to learn about world music and improvisation first hand from internationally-renowned musicians born and brought up in all major musical traditions worldwide.

Grand Union Orchestra musicians are not only acclaimed artists in their own right, they are also highly experienced teachers and workshop leaders. Under the general direction of Shanti Jayasinha and Grand Union’s founder composer/director Tony Haynes, the course will be led by these musicians, who have worked together as Grand Union’s core performers for many years.

WHO CAN APPLY?
Applications are welcome from young musicians of secondary school age and up (12 – 21) interested in learning about music from other parts of the world, and/or who play a non-European instrument. Open-mindedness is key at the GUO summer school. We encourage participants to experiment with new instruments they haven’t played before throughout the course.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
Work alongside leading professional musicians
Learn about world music, first hand, from experts
Discover new instruments and develop improvisation skills
Meet and create with like-minded young musicians and make new friends
Take part in the final concert featuring music created in the workshops

WHAT WILL IT COST?

£180 for the 4 day course include tuition and performance on the last day. There will be an Early Bird price of £150 if booked by 26th of May.

Young & Serious – 2017 Programme Launch

WANT TO WORK IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

Serious are looking for the UK’s top young events producers to take part in this exciting free programme…

Young & Serious offers motivated young people aged 18 to 25 unique insights and experience within the music industry, with the chance to attend industry events, talks and workshops, work with exciting national & international artists and programme and deliver music activity.

This free programme kickstarts with a residential weekender, where you will meet people working across all areas of the music industry. This will be followed by regular meetings and online activity, through which you will plan your own projects to take place during the EFG London Jazz Festival 2017, gaining an Arts Award qualification.

Hackney pupil wins Outstanding Brass Scholar award at the London Music Awards!

Louis Lodder Award

Mayor’s Music Fund scholar Louis Lodder (Simon Marks Primary School) was nominated for the award by Hackney Music Service, and was chosen from brass scholars across London to win the outstanding brass award – a tremendous achievement, we are all extremely proud of him! The award ceremony took place at the Roundhouse on Thursday 11th June.

This is the second year in a row a Hackney pupil has been selected for an awarded as last year Kingsmead’s Daniel Aidoo was awarded the outstanding percussion scholar prize. To top it all off, Louis performed the first movement of Mozart’s 1st Horn Concerto with the Hackney Training Orchestra for their end of term concert. He will be performing the piece again at the HMS Project Partnership Performance day on Friday 3rd July 2015.

Hackney Sings!

14 Hackney Primary Schools took part in the Gresham Centre’s ‘Open Minds’ vocal project with Apollo5 this Spring/Summer Term. All participating schools received visits from Apollo5 to work both with their pupils and teachers to improve vocal confidence and skill, and to spread the joy of singing across the school. All participating schools took part in final performances at the Gresham Centre.

Schools involved: Mandeville, Kingsmead, Simon Marks, Rushmore, Colvestone, London Fields, St Matthias, Millfields, Whitmore, Woodberry Down, Hoxton Garden, Daubeney, Brook and Springfield.

The Senior Hackney Borough Youth Choir have also been working on a Young Leaders project with Apollo5 this Spring, building up their workshop leading skills. Members of Senior HBYC supported Apollo5 in facilitating the workshops with primary schools at the Gresham Centre, a fantastic achievement for a group of Yr7 – 11 pupils!

An organ visits Hackney!

We have been extremely lucky to have built a new partnership this year with Tom Daggett from St Paul’s Cathedral Outreach. This relationship has allowed us to organised three Hackney Primary Schools to host an actual church organ for the day, with concert and workshops included. Schools involved have been St John the Baptist, St Paul’s and St Michael’s and Holy Trinity. See full article here.
